Welcome to my world of flamboyant, colourful, abstract art and visual storytelling. I’m Sophie Gill, and I’m delighted to share my creative journey with you.
Inspired by music and the people and places of my past, I create art that sings: bright, confident, and energetic pieces, most often using acrylic and chalk pastel. Music plays a huge role in my work, particularly jazz, rhythm and blues, and disco. These genres meld and fuse into spontaneous outpourings of shapes and motifs that burst onto the canvas. With a background in dance—jazz, ballet, and hip-hop—I bring the joy of movement to my art, allowing it to flow naturally into every piece I create.
I also enjoy crafting thoughtful, quirky digital illustrations, which I share on my Instagram platform, @sofgillustrations. These simple expressions reflect my unique response to moments in time, life experiences, and events both local and global. They’re like snapshots of my personality, filled with compassion, humour, and my perspective on the world.
In 2018, I graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Auckland University of Technology, and I’ve been pursuing my passion for creating art and spreading joy ever since, from my home in Auckland.
